Balaramapuram is a village well known for handloom textiles. Balaramapuram is famous as the centre for the production of traditional varieties of handloom textiles. It is consider as the second largest market hub in Trivandrum.
Location
Balaramapuram is located on NH 47 south of the Trivandrum. It is about 13 km from the Trivandrum city. Nearest tourist places located near to it are kovalam, neyyantinkara and neyyar dam. Balaramapuram is a well developed area.
History
Maharaja Balaramavarma who first introduced handloom weaving at Balaramapuram. The Delava of Maharaja brought seven weaver families Shaliyar from Tamilnadu to produce fabrics for the members of the royal family and made them settle at Balaramapuram in a separate location now called "Shaliar Street". Market places were opened at convenient locations to make the marketing of products easier. The present residents of the street are the descendents of these seven families. Shaliyar is communities who speak Tamil and marry within their community.
Hand loom shops
There are many shops of handloom around balaramapuram and its neighboring villages too. Main shop are found at the shaliar street. Government owned shops are Hantex showroom also presented on the sides of NH 47. Government rebates are available at the period of festivals.
All round
They are many other shops, school, hotel,petrol pump, police station etc on the road side. SPR and Suray hotel are well known.their is 24 hr a hotel at junction named sahab hotel. Auto and taxi stand are at vizhinaj and kattakada road.
